Professional Standards and Career Stage Expectations

Many schools are in still in transition when it comes to the recent Performance Related Pay (PRP) structure, with a lot of confusion about how PRP, Professional Standards and career stage expectations are connected.

In our work on the Performance Management and Appraisal System and in training with schools we have been inundated with questions around how to link the standards to some sort of idea of career stage expectations.

The Lessons Learned Professional Standards Document has been designed to take the hassle out of interpreting what staff at different pay points should be doing as part of their professional practice.

There is an assumption that all staff have met the professional standards at the most basic level, but out document outlines what they should be doing above and beyond the basics.

The standards document contains comprehensive descriptors for any staff members working at M1 through to UPS3 – it can be shared with colleagues to ensure everyone knows what is expected of them and forms an excellent basis for any appraisal and performance management discussions; if an element of the standards hasn’t been met to a certain level you have an appraisal objective identified for them to work towards.

The document is available in electronic format for you to amend and adjust to suit your school, including your school logo, name and amendments to the descriptor wording should you want to.
