Recruiting a new Headteacher can be a daunting and extremely challenging task. A governing body will often experience the process only once, so experienced support is essential. The appointment of the right Headteacher can provide the catalyst for a school to refresh its provision and make great strides in a short period of time.

The process can be very rewarding for all involved but needs to handled in a friendly and flexible way to ensure governors feel they have control and understanding of the process, guided by an independent adviser.

The selection process, jointly designed with the governing body, should contain a range of practical exercises (e.g. lesson observations, assembly, written tasks, leadership meetings) and interview sessions (Governor, staff and pupil/student). We believe a fundamental element of the selection process is the involvement of as many members of the school community as possible.

Our Headteacher Recruitment Process

Planning & Set-Up – We will help you to understand the process, its pitfalls, the timescales and decision points, as well as the people and resources needed to get the job done. We will provide guidance in selecting you panel and brief them on their responsibilities.
Advertising the Post – We’ll agree the Job Description and Person Specification, and assemble an application pack. We will work with you to design and place the advert and arrange school visits. We are available during the school day, in the evenings and at week-ends to talk to you and potential candidates.
Short Listing – We’ll help you match applications to the Person Specification requirements, analyse supporting statements and undertaking additional investigations as necessary. We will support your shortlisting meeting and issue invitations to the selection day(s), reference requests and provide feedback to unsuccessful candidates.
Selection Day(s) – We provide suggestions for the structure and content of the selection day(s) providing all the task materials for candidates, panel and others involved. During the days we verify the candidates identities; run the interviews and exercises; and support the decision making. We manage the logistics of the day(s) and advise and support candidates, staff and governors throughout the process.

Appointment – Your task is over, but the candidate’s job has just begun.  You will need to consider how you will announce the appointment and the impact on staff, students and the community. We can help with additional support, such as coaching, mentoring and team building.
